2021 Toyota Avalon TRD Review: Not Your Typical Avalon
I cover the auto industry, from breaking news to car reviews.
While always being a well-built car and known for its superlative smooth ride, the Avalon always did have a little bit of a fuddy-duddy image. It was the retiree's car, the Floridian heading to the bingo hall, or a 4:00 early-bird dinner. It's little wonder then that Toyota Racing Development put in a great deal of time and effort to "make the Avalon cool again," well, perhaps not again. The result of their efforts was the 2021 Toyota Avalon TRD.
2021 Toyota Avalon TRD: Snapshot
- Base Price: $43,255
- Engine: DOHC 3.5L V6
- Power/Torque: 301 hp/267 lb-ft
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Top Speed: 130mph
- 0-60 in 6.1 seconds
Make the Avalon Cool: Check
Toyota's goal was to make this TRD model look the part, then they certainly succeeded. We loved the front end's powerful look with its enlarged grille, angular intakes, black alloys, and aerodynamic build. They've managed to shed every ounce of "old-person Japanese Buick" out of this model.
Sharp is the right word. It has a sharp and aggressive edge to its design and a look that says, "I'm coming, ready or not!" It rides on 19" lightweight alloys and does so about half an inch lower than the regular Avalon for a sportier ambiance and lower center of gravity.
Include Track Handling: Check
Toyota claimed they were going for track-style when it came to handling on the 2021 Avalon TRD. They included additional systems like Active Cornering Assist, which uses torque vectoring to help you turn more vigorously into sharp and tricky corners. The larger front brakes also help you feel more in control as you hurtle along in this non-grandpa version of the Avalon.
This model has a longer wheelbase, which is beneficial to handling and space, of course. Additionally, this model comes with a TRD exhaust giving it a nice growl at any RPM range.
Impress With The Drivetrain: Eh
The 2021 Avalon TRD does not come with an option for RWD or AWD. How can we call this a true "track model" when it doesn't include either of these drivetrain options? With only FWD to choose from, the slightly disheartening side is that, in many ways, the 2021 Avalon TRD is really just a factory-tuned Avalon. Now that's great, but it would be even cooler to see additional performance enhancements with the engine itself and offer AWD or RWD. It has some decent performance upgrades, but without complementing those with an RWD or AWD system, it feels diminished, somewhat.
Is it Really Sportier? Yes…But Only Just
The interior gets some nice sports design credentials, such as red stitching and seat belts, a three-spoke steering wheel, a large minimalist center stack with a big infotainment touchscreen, brushed aluminum pedals, and interior trim. There's a slickness to it that's hard to fault, carrying Toyota's signature sense of elegant simplicity.
However, when we're talking about a supposed track-inspired model, it's hard to get over some omissions like an upgraded engine. Still, the Avalon TRD is progress and definitely looks the part inside and out. It's also fun to drive, handles very well, and it's okay to be under 40 and seen in public driving it. If you're in the market for a full-size sedan that's still affordable but has a sporty edge, then this is a solid pick.
